Activities inside Kruger National Park & nearby Game Reserves

The lodges and camps within all South African private game reserves and Big 5 National Parks provide a variety of activities:

  • All provide Guided Game Drives and Guided Walks to view wildlife.
  • Most have a Swimming Pool and Sun-deck
  • Some offer community visits, have a Wellness Centre, Gym or Tennis Court.

Here, we focus on Kruger National Park and all surrounding Private Game Reserves


Game Drives

  • An experienced guide and tracker accompanies guests on an open Land Rover.

  • Two game drives per day are usually included in the accommodation package.

  • Coffee / Tea is usually served before or during a sunrise drive and breakfast after.

  • Afternoon tea is usually served before a sunset drive and dinner after.

  • Sundowners are often offered during a break in the drive to give guests a chance to relax and appreciate the beauty of the sun setting over the African bush.

  • It can be cool on the early morning and evening drives, even in summer.

  • A light jacket or sweater is recommended for summer & a warm jacket, gloves and woolen cap for winter.

  • Blankets are usually provided in the Land Rover.

  • Safari Resort Lodges usually don't provide refreshments as part of the game drive.

  • Private guided game drives with exclusive use of a Land Rover usually available with prior arrangement.

  • Lodges and resorts restrict regular Game Drives to children over 6yrs.

  • Most offer special children's drives.

Guided Walks

  • Guided walks are usually included in the daily tariff.

  • Informative guides provide the opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region.

  • Professional trackers on the walk give the guest the thrill of tracking and often finding one of the Big 5!

  • Guests should wear comfortable walking shoes or boots, cool cotton clothing and a sunhat.Use sunscreen as the sun can be fierce - especially in summer.

  • Insect repellent is recommended.

  • Most lodges offer a stop for drinks and a snack - if they don't, make sure you take drinking water with you.

  • Most Lodges and resorts restrict Guided Walks to children over 13 years.

  • Some have bush walks for younger children under their "kids program".

Rhino Capture

  • Guests assist professional wildlife veterinarians and conservationists in their game capture duties.

  • The game-capture operations form part of the holistic management plans of the various conservation areas.

  • Participants are involved in all aspects of game capture.They are safely guided through each step by experienced professionals.

This activity is unique to Timbavati Nature Reserve

Specialized Photographic Safaris 

Some lodges offer guests specialized photographic safaris with world renowned photographers.

  • Personal game vehicle, guide and specialist can be arranged.

  • Cater to birders, animal enthusiasts and those passionate about the smaller things in the bush.

  • Enquire at your camp of choice.

Health Spa

  • A Health Spa is located at most of the Luxury Lodges in the Sabi Sand, Thornybush and Kapama game reserves.

  • Most of the Adventure Safari Camps within Timbavati don’t have a gym/spa, whilst the Exclusive Lodges do.

  • A range of massage, skin care and spa body treatments are available to guests.

  • Some Lodges offer body treatments such as massage, scrubs and masks in the privacy and comfort of your suite.

  • A steam room and tranquil chill-out area is available in some lodges.

  • Manicure and pedicure treatments are usually available.


  • A well-equipped gym is found in many of the Lodges.

  • Some have a chill-out area or steam room for relaxing in after exercise.

  • Some wellness centres have a pool.

  • Some lodges offer bush gyms with superb waterhole views.

Swimming Pools  

All Lodges and Safari Resorts have a swimming pool and sun deck.

  • Some Lodges have private plunge pools for individual suites.

  • Some of the swimming pool areas have dining on the pool deck, lap pools, screened massage facilities.

  • Most of the swimming pools can be heated in winter.

  • Some private plunge pools are also heated.

The swimming pools all have spectacular views of the reserve.

  • Most overlook a watering hole or riverbed.


 Cuisine is fresh, sourced from local markets and is top class. 

  • All meals are included in most camps.

  • Some include all drinks (local liquor).

  • All Lodges offer indoor and outdoor dining.

  • Most offer fine dining in the dining room and traditional South African BBQ/Braai in the boma.

  • Some offer dining around the pool or on the riverbank.

  • Romantic private dinners for couples can usually be arranged.

  • Some Lodges offer meals areas, times or menus for children.

Activities within Kruger National Park include:

Game Drives

The self-drive option offers a personal itinerary, freedom to explore your own path and experience truly exciting, close-up encounters with wild life.

 For a change, SANParks, offers daily game drives from most camps.

  • Sunrise and sunset drives are 3-4 hours.

  • Night drives are 2-3 hrs. They offer a tantalizing look at the reserve when most guests are confined to camp.

  • Take water, a hat and warm jacket.

Guided Walks

  • Available at most camps.

Morning and afternoon walks. 

  • Duration 3 hours.

  • Guests should wear comfortable walking shoes or boots.

  • Trained field guides with back-up rifles take groups of up to 8 people out into the countryside and view wildlife on foot.

  • Guests learn and observe fascinating information about the African bush, birds and animals.

Mountain Bike Trails

  • The trail is led by two qualified and armed field guides.

  • Operates from Olifants camp only

  • Subject to availability.

Wilderness and Adventure Trails

Wilderness Trails

  • There are a variety of wilderness walking trails available for up to 4 days.

  • Cater to fit and adventurous guests.

  • Sleep in tents under the stars.

  • Daily trails through pristine bush.

  • Food and water provided.

  • Bring own snacks and alcohol.

4x4 Adventure Trails

  • Experience the adventure in your own 4x4.

  • Duration - one day.

  • Limit of 6 vehicles per day - GPS recommended.

  • Totally self-catered - no littering.

  • No facilities along the way.

  • Vigilance needed especially when alighting from vehicle.


The Skukuza Golf Course is a magnificent 9-hole (18 tee) golf course on the outskirts of Skukuza Rest Camp.

  • Be aware, this course is inside the park and is not fenced in!

  • Clubs and caddies available for hire.

  • You are likely to see some wildlife and be serenaded by hippo in the river.

  • Snacks, Light refreshments and full bar facility.


All National Parks main camps (except Olifants Camp), have swimming pools - some even have two.

  • Set within picturesque grounds with shady trees, umbrellas and seating.

  • All swimming pools are fenced.

  • Some of the Day Visitors Areas have swimming pools

Bush BBQ

Guests have the exciting opportunity to enjoy a starlit dinner or early morning breakfast within the reserve surrounded by pristine bushland.

  • Venues are within a cleared area surrounded by a single wire electric fence.

  • Dine by lamplight around a fire and share safari tales.

  • South African fare cooked over hot coals.

  • Participants are accompanied by an armed ranger.

  • Enjoy a short night drive to and from the venue. 

Game Viewing Hides

There are numerous game viewing hides scattered throughout the National Parks.

  • A rare opportunity to view game in their natural habitat around waterholes.

  • Within Kruger, all hides are secured with gates.

  • Guests may sleepover in two hides within Kruger.

  • All hides are elevated off the ground.

Lookout Viewpoints

There are a variety of lookouts throughout Kruger National Park.

  • No food or drink.

  • No toilets or hot water.

  • Stunning views.

  • Some have shaded seating

  • Alight at your own risk.

Picnic sites 

Picnic sites are found throughout the park.

  • Toilet and basic kitchen facilities.

  • Gas BBQs, boiling water tables and shade.

  • Some offer snacks, soft drinks and wood for purchase. 


Shops are found throughout Kruger at:

  • All main camps.

  • Orpen, Crocodile Bridge and Phalaborwa gates.

  • Some picnic sites.

  • Consider buying fresh meat, fruit, vegetables before you enter the park.
