GREATER KRUGER PARK

This useful guide to weather in South Africa's Greater Kruger Park area will help you when deciding on your perfect safari experience.
Your safari adventure will be completly difference depending on when you choose to visit.
Summers are warm and wet with lush vegetation and plenty of baby animals to see.
Winter brings crisp, frosty mornings, clear skies and dry grassland where widllife viewing is less obstructed by high grass and lush bushland.
Spring is the perfect time to see new re-growth of wild flowers, spectacular storms and mild nights.
Autumn / fall bring long sunny evenings, brush fires, cooler temperatures and active waterholes.

WHEN TO GO TO KRUGER (Summer or Winter?)

  • Greater Kruger Park & surrounds are excellent for game viewing all year round.
  • Be open to looking for the little things - like a beautiful flower, an unusual insect, a majestic tree.
  • In this way, you will truly be captivated by this pristine wilderness.

Winter

  • Mild - Warm days
  • Cool nights
  • Gates open later and close earlier
  • Less chance of rain
  • Animals gather around the waterholes as the area slowly dries
  • Animals often found on the roads early morning and near sunset to warm themselves
  • The straw colour of the grass makes it harder to spot predators
  • Elephants, rhino and buffalo stand out
  • Brush fires are set to control the vegetation
  • Less insects
  • Less risk of malaria (still need to take precautions)

Summer

  • Hot & humid days
  • Warm nights
  • Gates open earlier and close later
  • Abundance of babies - of all shapes and sizes
  • Chance of rain - mostly afternoon thunderstorms
  • Animals seen more often on the road after rain
  • Predators easier to spot in the green grass
  • Long grass in some areas can make animals harder to spot
  • More insects
  • High risk Malaria season

NOTE:

  • During school holidays and over long weekends, Kruger National Park is busier.
  • Bookings must be made at all Accommodation before arrival.
  • Book early to avoid disappointment.
          

TIME DIFFERENCE

  • South Africa is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time(UK).
  • 1 hour ahead of Central European Time.
  • 8 hours behind Eastern Standard Time (Australia).
  • 8 hours ahead of Central Standard Time (USA). 

HEATING & ELECTRICITY

  • All private Lodges provide heating.
  • Some suites have fireplaces and all have reverse-cycle air-conditioners or extra heaters
  • Some swimming pools are heated in winter.
  • The electrical current is 220/240 volts AC 50 HZ.
  • Most plugs are 15 amp 3-prong or 5 amp 2-prong, with round pins.
  • Many Private Game Lodges provide international adapters (check with them).
  • US-made appliances may need a transformer.
  • Most Lodge rooms have 110 volt outlets for electric shavers and appliances.
